James Lacotte, O.D., (right) Associate Optometrist at Madison Eyes, examines Julia Blumert of Chatham, NJ, at a back-to-school appointment. A comprehensive eye exam provides the best opportunity to treat and correct vision problems and is one of the most important to-dos as children head back to school.

Early detection and treatment provide the very best opportunity to treat and correct vision problems to help children see clearly. Both the American Optometric Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommend  that a child’s first eye exam take place between six months and twelve months of age. Unless problems are detected, the next exam should be at age three, and then every two years once a child begins school.
